Early efforts make a world of difference in preventing childhood obesity

The steady rise of obesity rates in America’s children should be a wakeup call for everyone, especially parents. Yet, it seems that those who should take the strongest course of action consistently ignore this growing epidemic. In a time when external factors make it more and more difficult to raise healthy children, it is important to recognize the environmental and nutritional aspects associated with childhood obesity. The common claim that, “he’s just big-boned” can only rationalize a child’s unhealthy weight so much. At some point parents need to look beyond genetics.

This year’s American Heart Association Annual Update reported that more than 10 percent of U.S. toddlers and preschoolers between the ages of two and five are overweight. It also found that nearly 4 million children ages 6 to 11 and 5.3 million young people ages 12 to 19 were overweight or obese. These shocking statistics account for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that child obesity rates have doubled since the early 1970s, with approximately 15 percent of children and adolescents now overweight.

This national epidemic is rapidly turning into a global pandemic, the obesity rates in other countries are, equally shocking. The International Obesity Task Force reports that the number of overweight European children is rising 400,000 per year. Recent clinical testing done on 367 children in Aruba found that 36.3 percent suffered from excess body weight, 10.2 percent were overweight, nd 26.1 percent were obese. Nearly one fourth showed pathological lipid profiles. The number of children with pathological lipid profiles tended to increase with age. Further testing of 2,950 school-aged children (ages 6 to 11) classified 26 percent as obese.

Childhood obesity comes with various undesirable health effects, such as reduced lung and alveolar capacity, poor metabolism leading to growth and developmental disorders, reduced physical activity that can lead to reduced bone mass and joint problems, type II diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. These health issues will not only impact our children, but also the state of public health as a whole. It is estimated that the rapid increases in childhood obesity will shorten the future American lifespan by two to five years. This will make our children’s generation the first group to die younger than their parents.

With mounting studies finding that children are reaching unhealthy weights earlier and earlier in life, it is imperative that we examine some of the external factors that influence the development and growth of infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Three important factors that affect children’s early development are: breastfeeding practices, home environment and activities, and toddler nutrition. By weighing current research, practical guidelines, and realistic goals, parents can take early steps to raise healthy and fit children.

Breastfeeding
Nursing an infant is the most effective way a mother can provide nourishment, and the most complete form of infant nutrition. So why are only 35 percent of infants being breastfed for the first six months of life and a mere 16 percent receiving breast milk for a full year? Some would argue that the low rate is due to the influx of working mothers, the increasing scrutiny of public breastfeeding, the perceived lack of adequate milk supply, or poor breastfeeding education of mothersto- be. Whatever the primary reason may be, it is imperative to the health of future generations that the rates of breastfed infants increase. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the U.S. Public Health Service support a 2010 goal that at least 50 percent of infants will be breastfed for six months postpartum.

Breast milk has the right amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein that infants need for proper growth and development. Recent studies have shown that the antibodies found in breast milk help to protect infants from viruses and bacteria, and, as a result, these infants are less likely to develop ear infections, diarrhea, and respiratory illnesses. It has also been shown that breastfed infants tend to gain less unnecessary weight.

Other studies have found that breastfeeding for longer than six months may result in children being less overweight later in life. Varied studies found reduced risks of being overweight and obese depending on children’s socioeconomic status, birth weight, sex, and length of time they were breastfed.
The connection breastfeeding and a reduced risk of children being overweight and obese, combined with the positive nutrition and development facts about breast milk, should be enough to encourage all parents to incorporate breastfeeding in their parenting practice.

Home Environment and Activities
The environment in which a child is raised has an enormous impact on a healthy childhood and adolescent weight. Family environments are key to the development of early childhood activity preferences, food intake patterns, and eating habits.
Parents should actively provide their children
with positive examples through their own actions.
These factors, along with parental eating behavior, will directly affect children's developing weight status. However, the strongest predictor of overweight and obese children is the mother's weight. Children of overweight mothers are three times as likely to be overweight; children of obese mothers are four times as likely to be obese.

Taking into account the myriad environmental factors that influence children's weight, it is important that parents actively provide their children with positive examples through their own actions. Children are more likely to form good dietary habits if their parents display healthy eating practices, such as eating breakfast everyday, eating small portions of food several times per day, and not consuming food that contains excessive fat or simple sugars.

Factors that are not related to food, but rather to physical activity and behavior, can also be directly associated with excess weight and obesity risk. Children who use electronic games and television as primary forms of entertainment have a significantly higher risk of becoming obese. It has also been shown that children from obese and overweight families have a higher preference for sedentary activities and pastimes.

All of these familial factors—parental health, family dietary habits and pastime activities—should be examined. There are marked weight differences in children who are guided by healthy parents, practice moderate eating routines, and participate in varied activities such as sports, games, dancing, and martial arts.
Toddler Nutrition
As a whole, children today are overfed and undernourished. Children's normal and expected physical growth requires adequate nutrients, including micronutrients, vitamins and trace elements. Yet many children do not obtain adequate amounts of calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, and vitamins A, C and E. Larger portion sizes of less-nutritious foods are all too commonplace, thanks to the abundance of junk food that is directly marketed to kids. Up from the 7 percent figure of 1994, the 2005 finding of 10 percent of overweight 2- to 5-year-olds is projected to keep rising as unhealthy eating habits are increasingly formed at the toddler and preschool ages.

Making a smooth transition from breast milk and formula to small meals can either make or break a child's future eating patterns. Toddlerhood is especially important for laying the foundation for a healthy childhood. This age is a key development period for growth of tissue and organs, as well as psychological and intellectual. From 12 to 24 months, toddlers gain an average of 3 to 5 pounds and grow an average of 3 to 5 inches.
The USDA's Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children recommends the following food choices for 2- to 6-year olds:
  • 6 servings of breads, cereals, rice, and pasta
  • 3 servings of vegetables
  • 2 servings of fruit
  • 2 servings of dairy products
  • 2 servings of meat, fish, poultry, and legumes
However, toddlers' actual food intake shows quite a departure from the USDA's recommendations. More than 25 percent of toddlers eat French fries on a daily basis, an estimated 62 percent consume a baked dessert, 20 percent consume candy, and 44 percent drink a sweetened beverage.

Sweetened beverages, such as added sugar juice, boxed drinks, and sodas are high in sugar, high in calories and low in nutrients. Recent studies have found a link between overweight preschoolers and their consumption of such “sweet drinks” and have also determined that added-sugar beverages and, to a lesser extent, 100 percent juice, decrease the diet quality of young children. On average, American preschoolers consume about 14 to 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, mostly from fruit-flavored drinks, high-fat desserts and cola-type soft drinks.

In an attempt to curb the direct marketing of junk food to America's children, organizations such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) have recommended a set of advertising guidelines for the food and beverage industries. While it is unrealistic to only have children eat fruits and vegetables, it is plausible to limit the types of food that are directly targeted at children's easily influenced taste buds. Specifically, CSPI proposed that fruit drinks marketed to kids should contain at least 50 percent fruit juice and no caloric sweeteners.

Natural food formulators are also tackling toddlers' lack of nutritional drink mediums. The recent development of an alternative to high-sugar drinks and juices, in the form of an all-natural, nutritional powdered drink mix, further addresses the increasing need for proper early childhood nutrition.

There is no easy solution or miracle drug to “cure” childhood obesity. The most effective preventative tactic is to bring information about external obesity risk factors to the top-of-mind within the home, mainstream media and school systems. Collective efforts by parents, lawmakers, teachers, industry players, health professionals, and community leaders can work to further educate themselves and others on the importance of establishing healthy eating habits for children in their earliest years. It is absolutely necessary to promote the development and application of breastfeeding, lifestyle, and nutrition education programs to effectively combat the rapidly increasing rates of childhood obesity.

BEST Back to School TREATS

You would be surprised to learn that most children receive at least one-fourth of their calories from snacks. Most people think of children’s snacks and treats as basic junk food, unaware that all snacks or treats do not need to be high in sugar, unhealthy oil or junk foods. Snacking can be fine and even good for school-age children, with most loving to snack more than eat meals.

If you provide nutritious snacks, you are helping make sure that nutritional needs are met by your child, as well as what their palate craves. Growing, active children need more calories. But not all snacks are equal or good for your child. If the focus is nutritious snacks, they can help children get the needed daily vitamin and mineral nutrients they need.

The not-so-good or downright bad snacks can increase cavities and other problems, such as weight gain and health problems experienced as an adult. If the focus of your child’s snacks is sugary foods, this could also start a very unhealthy habit and could lead to sugar cravings, which is an addiction to sweets. And of course eating too many sweets causes tooth decay and eventually poor oral health.
Snacks that are high in sugar, sticky foods or ones that are sucked on, stay in the mouth longer and are the type cavity causing bacteria love. Examples of some of these foods are suckers and donuts. Studies show if high sugar foods are eaten as part of a meal, they are not as much a problem in producing cavities, instead of by themselves in between meals. The reason being that when eaten with meals, other foods or drinks can help clean these types of sticky foods.

Moderation has been said to be the key to good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. It’s okay for your child to enjoy birthday cake, Halloween candy and holiday sweets. However, it’s important to include the other needed nutrients that have been recommended in the food pyramid.
It’s recommended never to force a child to eat. They need to learn to eat when their bodies tell them they’re hungry. Teaching your child to balance structured meals and freedom of choice for snacks is a healthy attitude to nurture.

HEALTHY SNACK RECIPES
The Internet has literally hundreds of suggested recipes for healthy snacks. Below are listed some of the best healthy snack ideas for your school-aged child.

Cheese shaped like stars, hearts, circles or squares. This is easy to do with low fat cheese and cookie cutters.
  • Salt free pretzel sticks.
  • Baked tortilla chips, whole-wheat crackers, toasted pita triangles with healthy dip.
  • Veggies with hummus or low fat ranch dip. It’s more fun when they can dip the veggie sticks of carrots, celery or cucumbers in a tasty dip, than by itself.
  • Sliced fruit with sweet, creamy dip such as applesauce, yogurt sweetened with honey or fruit sweetened preserves.
  • Low fat yogurt mixed with organic fruit sweetened preserves. Top with low fat non-dairy whip cream.
  • Mini sandwiches made of wholewheat crackers, cookie cutter funshaped pita or whole wheat bread, topped with lunch meat or cheese.
  • Mini pizza made with half an English muffin or pita topped with low-fat mozzarella cheese, chopped vegetables and lean meat.
  • Popsicles made of fresh juice frozen in store bought Popsicle molds. You can also add puree of fruit to these. Small paper cups and wooden Popsicle sticks can be substituted for Popsicle mold.
  • Home made frozen yogurt: pour your favorite flavor yogurt in popsicle mold or small paper cup, stretch a small piece of plastic wrap across top of cup, place the stick through the plastic by poking a hole. Freeze and remove the cup and plastic wrap and enjoy.
  • Milkshake or smoothie is a favorite with banana (or other fruit), milk, yogurt, juice and ice, mixed in blender.
  • Cookie recipes can have substitution for sugar and fat with agave nectar and applesauce. Shape the cookies to resemble happy faces, bears or Mickey Mouse with raisins, sesame or sunflower seeds.
  • Zucchini, carrots, bananas or blueberries can be added to muffin or bread recipes without any taste difference. Chop the veggies and fruit fine or mash, and add to the mix before baking.
  • Celery stick spread with peanut butter or low-fat cream cheese is another favorite. Can be topped with raisins for a variety.
  • Apple slices spread with peanut butter.
  • Fill an ice cream cone with vanilla yogurt, chopped apples, strawberries and other favorite fruit. For variety, add whole grain cereal.
  • Pop low-fat popcorn made of organic kernels.
  • Mini quesadilla made in a microwave or toasted with soft tortilla with lowfat cheese.
Remember, the wrong snacks add extra empty calories, sugar and fat to your child’s sensitive body. Unhealthy food can increase the risk of diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay. Prevention is the key at any age. Exercise and healthy diet in childhood can decrease risk of diseases normally associated with adults, such as atherosclerosis, which is stiff, clogged arteries.
In addition to three regular meals, healthy snacks can help provide needed nutrients to children. Make sure to keep junk food out of your refrigerator and cupboards, or within reach of children. Add variety and get creative in your presentation of snacks, and promote independence by keeping healthy snacks within reach.

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), following the guidelines below will help give your child a nutritious diet:
  1. Offer five servings of fruits and vegetables a day
  2. Choose healthy sources of protein, such as lean meat, nuts and eggs
  3. Serve whole-grain breads and cereals for their high fiber content
  4. Limit fast foods and junk food 5. Offer water and milk instead of sugary fruit drinks and soda
Make sure to read labels and don’t get fooled by gimmicks that claim to be “healthy,” “low fat” or “natural.” The nutrition labels will list what the real story is, then decide if it is truly healthy.
Snacks can be nutritious and at the same time fun and delicious. Learn how to prepare healthy treats that your child will love to snack on. Remember to always help your child develop good oral hygiene habits on a daily basis.

This Test Could Save Lives- 30 Percent of Women Have Not Had It.

The American College of Pathology states that four out of five women who die of cervical cancer had not had a PAP smear in the previous five years. According to U.S. statistics, the highest incidence of cervical cancer and the highest death rates occur in women over the age of 55, a group that often stops having annual PAP tests. PAP smears save lives by discovering abnormal cells, called cervical dysplasia, early enough to prevent loss of life from cervical cancer. All adult women from the age of 18 should have an annual PAP test to ensure that their cervix is healthy. But what can be done when the test comes back abnormal?

We know the main risk factors that promote abnormal cervical cells include using the birth control pill, increasing age, infection with the Human Papilloma Virus—HPV (the virus that also causes warts), smoking, and nutritional deficiencies of folic acid, vitamin A and vitamin C.

We definitely do not want to ignore abnormal PAP test results. In North America, we grade our PAP tests based on this scale: a CINI, CINII, CINIII, or a CINIV. A CINIV is cancer. Most women are not treated until they have an invasive CINIII. Always ask what grade your test is. Too many women are advised that they have an abnormal test result, told to come back in six months for another test, but not given any suggestions for how to get their cervical cells to return to normal. Yes, sometimes abnormal cells return to normal with no treatment, but what if simply taking a nutritional supplement could ensure a normal PAP?

We know that HPV is implicated in a large majority of cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer cases. New research has shown that a nutrient called Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) can reverse abnormal cervical lesions before they have a chance to develop into cancer. In one of many studies 30 women with CINII and CINIII cervical lesions took 200mg of I3C daily for six months. Fifty percent in the treatment group had complete regression of their lesions, while none in the placebo group experienced any change in their lesions.

There are other nutrients that also help balance female hormones, protect us from abnormal cell growth and reduce our risk of breast cancer that I believe we should be taking everyday. These include:
  • Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) not only keeps our PAP smears normal but it also helps to break down cancer-causing estrogens to non-toxic forms. I3C is the most heavily researched nutrient shown to inhibit breast cancer tumors. We should call this the “breast cancer prevention nutrient.”
  • Calcium D-glucarate is a powerful detoxifier of excess and toxic estrogens from the liver. D-glucarate is very important as it ensures that toxins are excreted and not released elsewhere in the body. If you think about toxins as being wrapped up and packaged for removal from the body then D-glucarate ensures that somewhere along the way the package does not open and the toxic contents spill out. It is most often used in combination with I3C.
  • Green Tea Extract contains polyphenols, catechins and flavonoids shown to be protective against estrogen-dominant breast cancers. Research used the standardized extracts. Daily consumption of green tea is also cancer protective.
  • Curcumin is the yellow pigment of turmeric. Research using it in capsules found it be a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and to inhibit all steps of cancer formation: initiation, promotion, and progression. Curcumin also protects against inflammatory calcium loss from our bones.
  • Milk Thistle enhances detoxification from the liver, inhibits breast cancer cells from replicating and reduces the toxic effects of chemotherapy. Our hormones are processed and packaged in the liver, and a healthy liver is essential to healthy hormones.
  • Rosemary Extract, a potent antioxidant, inhibits breast cancer development, and it helps to detoxify carcinogenic estrogens.
  • Lycopene was recently shown to reduce a women’s risk of breast cancer by 36 percent when those women took 6.5 mg per day.
  • Sulfurophane, from broccoli sprout extract, has been shown to stimulate the body’s production of detoxification enzymes that eliminate xenoestrogens. Recent research points to this nutrient as a powerful anti-breast cancer agent. A modified sulfurophane is slated to be the next hot cancer drug.
  • Lignans found in flaxseed have been found to reduce the growth of breast cancer tumors, increase the excretion of toxic estrogens and inhibit hormone dominant cancers. Researchers at the University of Toronto believe that daily consumption of lignans can prevent breast cancer.
  • Omega 3s from fish oil, when taken in 3 gram per day doses, were found to improve the fatty acid composition of women’s breast tissue, thereby lowering breast cancer risk.
Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can be prevented. Have your annual PAP smear and make sure your mom has hers as well. Too many women after menopause are not having annual tests. PAP tests save lives! Smart women also take their multivitamin with minerals everyday and include Indole-3carbinol and the nutrients mentioned above to reduce their risk of cancer and hormonal problems.

Recover Your True Radiant Potential

There are many clicks to the Rubik’s Cube of self-transformation, and most require rethinking and undoing old mind-sets and self-sabotage to find your way back to your true radiant and glowing potential. Before we can find the ultimate path for ourselves, we must first reject the false paths that led us astray and then retrace our steps toward recovery. In the last issue, I appealed to you, through my own example, to reject today’s merry-go-round of short-sighted health and beauty solutions and take a more authentic path to transformation through health (if you missed the last issue, be sure to catch it). This month I offer some crucial first “twists” of the Rubik’s Cube toward recovery.

Reject, then recover from Modern body and beauty self-sabotage
The language of today’s hyped, high-tech approach to beauty and health disregards and even disparages our body’s innate wisdom, while making superheroes out of the next hot quick fixes. It seems harmless enough, but once we buy into this dialogue, we enter a treacherous physical realm as we partake in practices that actually jeopardize our precious internal body ecology, our metabolic integrity, our skin’s naturally protective functioning, and our future health and beauty. For most Americans, much of this destruction has already taken place before we reach our twenties. Modern technology and industry agendas have managed to infiltrate and alter every piece of the internal and external terrain of our bodies. Alas, we’ve been seduced by harsh and instantly gratifying yet self-sabotaging (expensive) choices disguised as solutions.

Examples of this are endless… An innocent teenager’s dependency on harsh acne drugs and topicals that compromise digestion and the anti-bacterial acid mantle of the skin (guaranteeing a pattern of unexplained new skin and health issues, once his teenage acne has cleared up)… A young woman’s unsuspecting use of powerful tooth whiteners that guarantee whiter teeth, but make her teeth more porous and thus prone to future staining (creating an avoidable dependency on stronger and stronger tooth whiteners)… Or the man with psoriasis who was not told that using steroid ointments would eventually thin his skin and destroy its immunity (guaranteeing him worse recurrences that steroids will not address).

Give yourself sanctuary from the top assaults
The first and most important step on the path back to your true potential is to establish a mindful and vigilant sanctuary from these self-sabotaging assaults. Once we do this, we can focus on recovering internal and external ecology and functioning.

  • Reject the self-sabotaging, body-shaming mind-sets perpetuated by industry through media and mainstream expert recommendations
  • Reject beverages and foods that disrupt and degrade metabolic balance (more on that in the next issue)
  • Reject poor quality fats that cause cellular malfunctions, such as trans-fats and cheap vegetable oils (omega-6 oils)
  • Reject synthetic preservatives, sweeteners, and additives that challenge the body
  • Reject unnecessary antibiotics and steroids (and any drugs tried first where natural remedies exist)
  • Reject skin function-destroying products, such as foaming cleansers, topical steroids, anti-bacterial soaps, harsh exfoliants, and the regular use of alpha-hydroxy acids
  • Eliminate chlorine and other chemicals in drinking and bathing water
  • Reject personal care products made with chemicals and toxins that sensitize or collect in the body, such as formaldehyde, pthalates, chemical sunscreens, and perfumes

Fortify your defense tactics
Now start to think defensively. Every time you avoid a course of antibiotics or steroids, you are saving your body an untold, guaranteed domino effect of health and beauty issues down the road. Once you adopt this mind-set, then recovering your internal balance and ecology is only a matter of strategic inner rebuilding through optimal diet and the use of key supplements. Some of the best defensive tactics against these destructive patterns include:

  • A dietary approach that optimizes body pH, minimizes inflammation, and improves insulin and leptin function (more on this in Part III).
  • Detoxifying measures such as colon, liver, kidney, and blood-cleansing regimens
  • A comprehensive multi-vitamin and mineral regimen plus fish oil to close general nutrition and omega-3 fat deficits and address specific issues as they arise
  • A comprehensive blood sugar stabling supplement as basic “antidote” and defense from modern food and beverage assaults (even from our
  • childhood)
  • A quality probiotic supplement to re-establish a balance of healthy gut bacteria
  • A non-toxic, nourishing, and regenerative approach to skin and personal care
  • Water purification systems for both drinking and bathing water

By incorporating these defense tactics into your daily ritual, you will automatically discontinue the desensitizing assaults on your body and progress from assaultrecovery mode into a healing and re-sensitizing mode. My book, The Truth About Beauty, includes hundreds of additional “upgrades” to potentially health-sabotaging conventional choices and products. Examples include healthful upgrades for harmful cooking oils, sweeteners, mouthwashes, deodorants, and just about everything else you’d put in or on your body.

The next phase:
Conquering Compulsive self-sabotage
In the next issue, I’ll help you identify and chip away at the most stubborn, dangerous, and entrenched barrier to health recovery and self-transformation of all: compulsive self-sabotage.

Should You Take A Statin Drug?

Statins are one of the most prescribed classes of drugs on the planet, and are given primarily to lower cholesterol. The most famous of the statins are Lipitor and Zocor, but there are plenty of others. Technically known as HMG-coenzymne A-reductase inhibitors—they slow down the process by which your body makes cholesterol, thus lowering the total amount in the bloodstream.

I’ve been arguing against the universal use of statin drugs for several years now, but I’ve felt like the kid at the parade who kept saying the emperor was naked even as all the “grown-ups” continued to admire the emperor’s sartorial elegance.

Among the arguments I and many of my esteemed colleagues have made include these (pay particular attention to number 4):
  1. Cholesterol doesn’t cause heart disease
  2. Half the people with normal cholesterol have heart attacks and half of those with no heart disease have high cholesterol
  3. Any possible benefit you may get from statin drugs is because they are mildly anti-inflammatory, not because they lower cholesterol, and
  4. There has never been a single piece of convincing evidence that lowering cholesterol in women prevents a single death.
Well, it’s probably too early to be jumping with glee, but there are signs—small ones, admittedly, but signs nonetheless—that these ideas are beginning to creep over into the mainstream media.

The latest good news is an article in Time magazine by Catherine Elton which says, among other things: “…there is little evidence that (statins) prevent heart disease in women” and goes on to ask the question, “If statins do not help prolong women’s lives, why are so many women taking them?”
Good question.

One answer is that most doctors in America have about 7 minutes to spend with a patient and practice medicine by formula. “High cholesterol? Prescribe a statin.” Next patient, please.

I suspect that most docs don’t even know that the old division between “good” and “bad” cholesterol is woefully out-of-date. We now know that there are at least 5 different types of LDL (so called “bad” cholesterol”). LDL that looks like big puffy cotton balls is harmless. LDL that looks like little hard BB-pellets is atherogenic. Nonetheless most docs simply look at “LDL” as if it is all the same—which it’s not.

Another reason so many women are put on statins is what Time magazine called “The prescription Gender Gap.” Gender-based medicine takes into account the differences between en and women in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, but, as Elton points out, it has been slow to catch on, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. “Before the 1990s, women were largely excluded from clinical drug trials—an attempt to protect pregnant women from harm and avoid the potentially confounding effects of women’s hormone fluctuations” she writes. “Since then, as studies have actively recruited women, gender-based research has begun to reveal crucial information about how the development of diseases—such as heart disease, lung cancer and autoimmune disorders—may affect women in markedly different ways from men.”

Alarms get raised about saturated fat raising cholesterol but these alarms are misguided. Saturated fat often does raise cholesterol—but it raises HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and tends to increase the big fluffy cotton ball type of LDL and decrease the little BB-pellet type. So theoretically your overall cholesterol could go up but you could actually be a lot less likely to have a heart attack. I’d much rather have a high LDL (where most of the LDL was “big fluffy cotton ball type”) than a lower LDL (where most of the LDL was the atherogenic “BB-pellets type”).

In my recent interview on the website Big Think, link http://bigthink.com/jonnybowden I was asked to suggest some strategies for the prevention of heart disease. My first suggestion—one which I admitted was bound to infuriate a lot of conventional docs—was to stop worrying about cholesterol.
By focusing exclusively on this one misunderstood molecule—one which you absolutely need for health, by the way—we have collectively missed paying attention to the far more important risk factors for disease: smoking, high triglycerides, inflammation, and being overweight and sedentary.

Of course the fact that the two main medicines for bringing down cholesterol—Zocor and Lipitor—bring in over 30 billion dollars a year for their manufacturers might have something to do with our obsession with cholesterol numbers.

After all, as the great American writer Upton Sinclair once said: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!”

MAGNESIUM for Pain Relief

Clinical experience, as well as research in nerve pain conditions such as pancreatic cancer, has shown that magnesium can be an effective treatment for pain. Although it is clear why magnesium can decrease muscle pain (it makes muscles relax), why it would help nerve pain was less clear. A new study on rats printed in The Journal of Physiology confirms our clinical experience that magnesium decreases nerve pain—while also pointing to how it works.

A major mechanism of pain is the excessive stimulation of a brain chemical called “NMDA.” The few medications that help decrease and balance this pain-carrying neurotransmitter have the downside of causing significant side effects. Magnesium seems to settle down NMDA without the toxicity. The upside of magnesium is it is very inexpensive (pennies a dose). The downside is it hasn’t yet made it through the FDA approval process.

The good news is you don’t have to wait for the FDA. For those who get diarrhea from magnesium, try a sustained-release magnesium, very effective without causing the diarrhea side effect. In addition, magnesium oxide, though not as well absorbed, can be found for about a nickel per 500 mg tablet in most health food stores.

For an especially powerful effect, the magnesium can be used intravenously, and is an important tool used by most holistic physicians. Intravenous (IV) magnesium is the single most effective treatment to eliminate an acute migraine headache and has even been shown to ease the incredibly severe nerve pain that can sometimes be seen in pancreatic cancer. It is also very helpful for settling down fibromyalgia pain, which has a muscle and nerve component.

The authors of the study suggest that magnesium deficiency can be a major amplifier of pain. Because of food processing, most people are magnesium deficient. If you have pain, a dose of 250 to 500 mg of magnesium a day can start to decrease these deficiencies as well as the pain, after just several weeks—while also leaving you feeling more energetic and decreasing your risk of heart disease! (If you have kidney problems, do not use without your physician’s okay.)

How to get solid pain relief, almost always, using a mix of natural and prescription therapies.
